The Invisible Band

August 19, 2020

Our durational installation, Minute/Year, is currently installed in bb15, in Linz, Austria, for the whole of 2020. Accompanying the work throughout 2020, there has been an ongoing program of events—interventions, micro-concerts, open minutes, and more—organised and curated by Gabriela Gordillo. The latest intervention in this series, The Invisible Band, occurred from August 3. to 9., at bb15.

To create this intervention, Gabriela invited seven different artists and improvisers to each be present in bb15 over the course of a week, one per day, and to each add a layer to Minute/Year in turn, each evening at 20:20.

This intervention allowed for a time-stretched collaborative process to unfurl over seven days—a form of distanced improvisation, in a year of enforced distance. Despite this spatial and temporal distance, The Invisible Band created a point of encounter between the participants in the resonance of layered sound. The story was being written each day, as the event occurred.

The first step in this process was undertaken by Adriana Torres Topaga, on Monday, 3. August.

Sam Bunn is an artist and independent scholar, working between installation, performance, and film to explore a missing strand of popular storytelling, the eutopian narrative. Focused on trying to imagine a more shared socio-political global norm, his practice is based on an experimental approach to making, and regularly involves working with others.

These were the traces created by The Invisible Band. We’re grateful to Gabriela for organising and overseeing the entire process, and of course to Adriana Torres Topaga, Gerald Harringer, Sam Bunn, Aimilia Liontou and GG, Aron Hollinger, Rosa Fürpass-Netočný, and Christopher Haritzer.

Here are all the days, combined, as a single one-minute video:

From today, this particular week-long intervention will begin to fade into the quietness of the late-summer bb15 space—somewhat similarly to its predecessor, Remote Voices, back in April 2020.
